Every fall a certain kind of phone call comes into the shop here in Burlington. Somebody bought a plow off a neighbor and wants to know what it takes to hang it on the front of the half-ton in the driveway. The honest answer is that bolting on the plow is the easy part. The truck is what needs the attention.
Climate normals from 1991 to 2020 put average annual snowfall at 41.0 inches in Racine, 40.1 inches at Lake Geneva in Walworth County and 36.2 inches in Kenosha, which brackets Burlington on three sides. That is enough to justify a blade if you have a long driveway off Highway 36, a shared lane by Browns Lake, or a few small lots you take care of around Racine County.
Here is what first-time plow owners miss. A plow is not an accessory the way a bed cover is. It is a permanently mounted working load that changes how your truck sits, how much heat it makes and how much electricity it needs. There is a catch people get wrong. The blade hangs forward of the front axle, and that reach multiplies what the suspension feels. BOSS makes the point directly: a truck with 800 pounds of front end reserve capacity cannot safely mount an 800-pound plow.
Ballast on the back end is the counterweight. WESTERN notes that proper ballast improves steering, braking and traction on icy surfaces by evening out weight distribution, and that it has to be secured behind the rear axle with a retainer kit. Loose weight sliding around the bed is its own hazard.
Front Springs, Ride Height and the Truck Alignment After Plow Install
Put a few hundred pounds on the nose of a half-ton and the nose goes down. Sometimes it is obvious in the driveway, sometimes it takes a tape measure at the fender lip.
Change a vehicle’s ride height and you change its wheel angles automatically. Modern Tire Dealer’s coverage of alignment fundamentals explains that camber moves positive or negative depending on the suspension design, caster shifts as well, and toe has to be checked and adjusted after ride height has been settled. Toe is not a set-it-once specification once the load on the springs has changed.
That is why a truck alignment after plow install belongs on the list rather than the “maybe later” pile. The alignment your truck had in July was measured at July’s ride height, and that is not the truck you are driving in December.
Skip it and the tires tell on you. We have watched it play out more than once: somebody bolts a blade on a 4×4 in November, mentions the front sits a little lower, and by February is shopping for front tires that had plenty of life left in the fall.
If the springs themselves are tired, no alignment fixes that. Worn front springs show up as a nose that never comes back up, a blade that scrapes on driveway transitions, and headlights aimed at the pavement. From the driver’s seat: a wander that has you correcting on straight road, a clunk over frost heaves that was not there last winter, steering that feels vague off center. Do not sit on any of those with a blade bolted to the truck.
Front Tires: What the Extra Weight Does to Them
Your front tires are carrying the plow, the mount and the truck, on cold pavement, with less air in them than you think. FISHER’s in-season checklist reminds plow owners to watch tire pressure because it diminishes in cold weather, which is exactly when the front axle is loaded heaviest.
The wear patterns diagnose the front end for free. Shoulder wear on one edge points toward camber, and a feathered, saw-toothed feel across the tread blocks points toward toe. On a plow truck, both usually trace back to that ride height change nobody re-measured.
Rotation matters more here than on a commuter car, because the front and rear axles live different lives all winter. If you are weighing a dedicated set of winter tires, the same storage and swap questions apply, just with more weight on the front axle.
Cooling: There Is a Steel Wall in Front of Your Radiator
This part surprises people, because it is not about plowing at all but about driving from job to job. WESTERN puts it plainly: the plow blade can block a significant portion of your radiator, restricting airflow and hindering cooling. Your cooling system was engineered assuming air comes through the grille at road speed. Park a steel moldboard there and that assumption goes away.
WESTERN’s transport recommendations are worth memorizing. Raise the plow to maximize radiator airflow, or angle it left or right so air gets diverted toward the radiator. Turn the heat and blower to maximum to pull engine heat into the cab. Reduce speed and do not exceed 45 miles per hour while transporting the blade. If the temperature keeps climbing, pull over somewhere safe and let it cool. An open stretch with the blade up and straight is exactly where a Racine County driver watches the gauge climb and cannot figure out why.
All of that assumes a cooling system in good shape to begin with. A marginal radiator, a soft hose, a tired fan clutch or old coolant will not announce itself in October. It announces itself with a blade on the truck, in a storm.
Transmission Heat From Low-Speed Pushing
Plowing is strange work for a drivetrain: heavy load, constant shifting between forward and reverse, almost no road speed to generate airflow. At 220 varnish starts forming on the friction material and clutches begin to slip. At 240 seals harden and the additive package degrades. At 260 clutch plates slip as the oil breaks down, and by 315 seals and clutches burn out.
A transmission on a plow truck lives closer to the top of that ladder than one on a commuter car. That is why plowing counts as severe service, and why fluid condition, cooler capacity and a temperature gauge are worth talking about before the season. The Charging System: A Pump, Extra Lights, and a Cold Battery
Here is the mismatch nobody mentions when they sell you a used plow. Snowplow hydraulic pump motors typically peak between 160 and 220 amps under load, with brief higher spikes when lifting a loaded blade. The FISHER 21500K-1 and WESTERN 56062K are rated at 200 amps, the BOSS HYD01685 at 210. Most stock half-ton pickups ship with a 130 to 150 amp alternator, which sags under repeated cycling. Industry guidance for any pump motor pulling 180 amps or more is a minimum 160 amp alternator with a Group 65 or larger battery, and heavy commercial use pushes that toward 200-plus amps and dual batteries.
Voltage drop is where this bites. A motor designed for 12.6 volts that only sees 11.4 volts at its terminals draws more current, runs hotter and wears its brushes out much faster. Cold makes it harder at the same time. Car batteries start losing power below 32 degrees and can lose half their power once it drops below zero. Cold cranking amps is the amps a battery can deliver for 30 seconds at zero degrees without falling below 7.2 volts. A battery that starts your truck fine in October is a different battery at 2 in the morning in January with a pump cycling on it.
This is the scenario we see most: the plow lifts fine in the yard, then hours into a storm the headlights dim and the blade slows, and the driver blames the plow when the charging system is the problem.
Your Pre-Season Plow Truck Checklist for Burlington and Racine County

Cycle all functions, check hydraulic fluid, torque every fastener, inspect hoses, wiring, plugs, shoes and the cutting edge, replace that edge if it is under 4 inches or badly chipped, aim the plow headlamps, and pack dielectric grease into the electrical plugs. Re-torque mounting bolts after first use and re-grease connectors monthly.
Carry a shovel, flashlight, tools, hydraulic fluid, a spare hose, a motor relay, a coil and fittings.

Where the snow goes is not just a courtesy question. Pushing snow or other material onto or across a public roadway is prohibited in Wisconsin under Wis.
