Most articles about winter tires stop at the easy part: which tire to buy, and roughly when to put it on. That’s the fun half of the decision. The other half shows up in your garage in April, when four heavy wheels are sitting in a corner and nobody remembers which one came off the front left.
Running winter tires in Burlington, WI isn’t a purchase. It’s a small ongoing routine, and it asks a few specific things of you twice a year. Here’s what that routine actually involves for drivers in Burlington and the surrounding Racine and Walworth County towns, from the wheels to the sensors to the storage shelf.
The Decision Nobody Explains: Second Wheels or Second Mounting
When you buy a winter set, you’re really answering a second question at the same time, whether anyone asks it out loud: do those winter tires get their own wheels, or do they share the wheels already on your vehicle?
Option one is a dedicated second set of wheels. The winter tires get mounted and balanced onto their own rims, usually steel or an inexpensive alloy. It’s one of the more common tire and wheel jobs we set up every fall. Each seasonal tire changeover after that is a bolt-off, bolt-on job. Nothing comes off a rim.
Option two is remounting the same rims. You keep one set of wheels, and the shop dismounts one set of tires and mounts the other onto those same rims every spring and every fall.
Both are legitimate, but they aren’t the same amount of work. Option two asks less of you at the start and more of you forever after. Option one is the bigger commitment up front, then it quietly gets simpler every year.
There’s a side benefit to the dedicated set that drivers around here feel more than most. Roads through Burlington, Union Grove, Waterford, and out toward Lake Geneva get salted heavily from November through March, and the winter wheels take that abuse instead of your good alloys. Your nice wheels spend the salt season indoors.
What Happens Every Time a Tire Comes Off the Rim
This is the part that decides the whole question, and it’s rarely explained at the counter.
Dismounting a tire means breaking the bead, the sealing edge where rubber meets wheel. Do that twice a year, every year, and you’re handling the bead area far more often than a driver who never swaps.
There’s also a part that gets replaced each time. According to Tire Review, the rubber snap-in valve stems used with tire pressure sensors should be replaced every time the tire comes off the wheel. The rubber hardens as it’s exposed to the elements, especially UV rays, and pulling a hard, dry stem back through the rim hole typically cracks or rips it. That becomes a slow leak later. Tire Review goes further and recommends changing out the sensor service kit every single time the tire comes off the rim, calling it a vital step rather than an upsell.
So the honest accounting of option two is: dismount, mount, a fresh service kit for each wheel, and a full balance. Twice a year. Every year.
Option one skips almost all of it. AutoGuide puts the difference plainly: drivers who keep winter and summer tires on the same set of rims have to pay for balancing each time the tires are mounted, while drivers with separate wheels for each set will likely only need the tires balanced once, until the tires themselves are replaced.

Does a Second Set of Wheels Need Its Own TPMS Sensors?
If you go with dedicated winter wheels, yes. TPMS sensors for a second set of wheels is the single most common surprise we see at the counter.
Modern Tire Dealer is direct about it: when a dedicated winter wheel set is used, new tire pressure sensors have to be installed on that set, with valve stems that match the wheel’s valve holes, and then programmed before the vehicle goes back on the road. A bare wheel has no sensor in it. Bolt on four sensorless wheels and the vehicle has nothing to listen to.
What a relearn is, in plain English
Your vehicle knows four sensor ID numbers and which corner each one lives at. Change the wheels and those IDs either change or move. A relearn is the procedure that reintroduces the sensors to the vehicle so the readings land at the right corners.
Modern Tire Dealer calls it best practice to relearn the system any time the wheels come off, not only when the sensors are new. The procedure varies by manufacturer, which is one reason a seasonal tire changeover is a shop job rather than a driveway job for most people.
Why an ignored warning light matters here
The temptation is to run the winter set without sensors and live with the dashboard light. It seems harmless in October. It stops being harmless in January.
A light that’s always on is a light you stop reading. Meanwhile Burlington’s average January low sits around 11 degrees, and air contracts as it cools, so this is exactly the stretch of the year when a tire quietly goes soft. The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association recommends checking inflation pressure during a monthly inspection, and says that stays important even on a vehicle with a monitoring system. A working system plus your own monthly check is belt and suspenders. A dead system plus a habit of ignoring the dash is neither.
Modern Tire Dealer also advises inspecting the sensors and their service parts at changeover to confirm proper sealing and battery performance. Sensors don’t last forever, and the changeover is the natural moment to look at them, since the wheel is already off.
Tire Mounting and Balancing in Burlington: Required Every Time, or Just Checked?
Remounting the same rims: a balance isn’t optional. The tire has been taken off the wheel and put back on in a different position, so the old wheel weights mean nothing. Tire mounting and balancing in Burlington is part of every single changeover on this path, in both directions.
Dedicated wheels: the set was balanced once when it was built, and that balance normally holds. What you want here is a check rather than a full rebalance. There are real reasons to ask for one:
- A wheel weight can be knocked off while the set is moved in and out of storage.
- You noticed a vibration at speed before the wheels came off, which will still be there when they go back on.
- The set had a flat repaired, hit a pothole, or took a curb since it was last balanced.

Where the Off-Season Set Lives for Six Months
Storage is the step people improvise, and it’s the step with the most published guidance behind it. The Tire Industry Association’s best management practices for tire storage were written for warehouses, but they translate cleanly to a garage in Racine or Walworth County:
- Clean, cool, dry, and dark, out of direct sunlight. The area should be ventilated, but with a minimum of circulating air moving across the tires. Keep it clear of oil, grease, and water, and of nails, stones, and wood chips that could damage a tire.
- Off the floor, on a rack or a pallet. TIA specifically calls for a pallet or storage rack to limit exposure to moisture and damage, and says not to use damaged racks or pallets.
- Away from anything with an electric motor. TIA warns to keep tires away from electric motors, battery chargers, welding equipment, and generators, because that equipment creates ozone, and ozone deteriorates rubber. A garage corner next to a chest freezer or a trickle charger is a worse spot than it looks.
- Standing up, not stacked, when you can. TIA notes that storing tires upright in racks prevents distortion and makes remounting easier. If you have to lay them flat, stack them so the bottom tire holds its shape.
- Drop the pressure if they’re on wheels. TIA says tires stored mounted on rims should be inflated to fifty percent of normal pressure, and that inflation gets adjusted back to the required pressure before they go back into service. That second half of the rule matters as much as the first.
The U.S. Tire Manufacturers Association gives the same short version: always store tires, whether mounted on a rim or not, in a clean, dry, cool, well-ventilated place, to prevent damage from heat, sunlight, or chemicals.
If the only spot you have is outside, TIA has a rule for that too. Get them up off the ground, cover them with an opaque, waterproof covering that has vent openings so moisture can’t build up underneath, and keep them off black asphalt.
One note on flat spots, since that’s the fear behind most of these questions. TIA’s guidance for a vehicle sitting in long-term storage is to move it at least every three months to prevent flat spotting and ozone cracking at the sidewall flex point. The same instinct applies to a stored set: get them off the concrete and don’t let them sit under strain in one position for half a year. If you don’t have room for that at home, say so when you book.
Label Them, or Guess in April
Take two minutes at the changeover and mark each tire with the corner it came off. A piece of tape and a marker on the sidewall is enough. Front left, front right, rear left, rear right.
For most drivers this is a convenience. For some it’s a hard requirement. Les Schwab explains that directional tires carry an arrow on the sidewall that must point toward the front of the vehicle when the tire is mounted correctly. Those tires can only be swapped front to back on the same side of the car. Crossing them to the opposite side means taking the tire off the wheel, flipping it, remounting it, and swapping it, which is a real job rather than a quick move in the bay.
Put four unmarked wheels back on in the spring and you have a decent chance of pointing two of them backward. Marked wheels also give you a record, which is what makes a tire rotation pattern possible across seasons instead of starting over every changeover.
A Wisconsin Footnote on Studs
If you moved here from a state where studded tires are common, set that idea aside. Wisconsin law permits tires with metal studs only on authorized emergency vehicles, school buses, vehicles used to deliver mail, and out-of-state vehicles passing through for no more than thirty days. Where studs are allowed, they may not project more than one-eighth of an inch beyond the tread surface.
For everyone else in Burlington, the second set is a studless winter set. That’s why the logistics in this post are the whole story. With studs off the table, everything that makes a second set work or not work comes down to mounting, sensors, balance, and storage.
